LED face masks are a genuinely confusing thing to shop for. Near-identical devices span $50 to $800, spec sheets are written to impress rather than inform, and the one number that decides whether the thing works is usually missing. Here's how to cut through it, in priority order.
1. Check the wavelengths first (and ignore the extra colours)
The at-home category is built on two bands: red (~630–660nm) and near-infrared (~830–850nm). That pairing is what the cosmetic-appearance evidence sits on, and what clinic-grade equipment used first. Your opening question for any mask: does it have both? Extra colours — blue, amber, green — make longer spec sheets, but they split a fixed LED budget across more modes and aren't where the evidence concentrates. A focused red + near-infrared mask often beats a seven-colour one.
2. Look for published irradiance — it's the real test
Irradiance (mW/cm²) is how much light power actually reaches your skin. Since the mechanism is dose-dependent, this is the number that decides whether a mask does anything at all — and most brands don't publish it. Two masks with identical wavelengths and very different irradiance are not the same product.
The tell of a trustworthy brand: not just a published number, but a number with its measurement distance stated ("X mW/cm² at the skin's surface") and, ideally, independently verified rather than lifted from a supplier brochure. A bare figure with no distance is close to meaningless — output at the LED face reads far higher than at real skin distance.
3. Treat LED count as the least important number
"480 light sources!" is marketing catnip and easy to inflate (it often means 160 LEDs with three emitters each). Diode count tells you nothing about delivered light. When a spec sheet leads with LED count and omits irradiance, you're reading an ad.
4. Check the safety paperwork
- IEC 62471 is the photobiological (eye) safety standard — a serious brand can state their model's assessed risk group. Eye protection in the box is a good sign.
- Red + near-infrared only is the conservative choice; blue-light modes attract the most eye-safety scrutiny.
- In Australia, be sceptical of "TGA approved" without a checkable ARTG number, and remember any mains adaptor should carry RCM marking (USB/battery devices sidestep this).
5. Weigh warranty, returns and support
A 2-year warranty says more about a maker's confidence than any testimonial. Check who actually honours it — local support beats an overseas mailbox. And note that hygiene rules mean many retailers refuse change-of-mind returns on face-worn devices, so a satisfaction guarantee is worth more than a returns window here.
6. Then — and only then — look at price
Price makes sense only after the four checks above. A cheaper mask with published, verified output and the right wavelengths can be better value than a pricier one that publishes nothing. Work out what you're paying for: brand, regulatory paperwork, warranty support, and — in a few honest cases — checkable specs.
The five-question shortlist
- Does it have red (~630nm) and near-infrared (~830nm)?
- Is irradiance published, with a stated measurement distance?
- Can the brand produce an IEC 62471 report, and are eye shields included?
- If it claims "TGA approved" — is there an ARTG number to check?
- What's the warranty, and who honours it?
Run any mask — including ours — through those five, and the shopping gets a lot clearer.
