How often should you use an LED face mask?

3–5 sessions a week, judged at 8 weeks — and the reasons why more isn't better. The complete usage-frequency guide.

The short answer: 3–5 sessions a week, every week, judged at 8 weeks. That's the frequency the published cosmetic research is built on, and it's what the premium brands' own protocols specify. Here's the longer answer, including why "more" doesn't work the way you'd hope.

Why 3–5 times a week?

The proposed mechanism of red and near-infrared light is cumulative — repeated small doses over weeks, not one big one. Clinical protocols settled on several-sessions-per-week because that's the cadence that showed appearance changes across 8–12 week study windows. Fewer sessions stretch the timeline; consistency matters more than any individual session.

Can you use it every day?

Most manufacturers permit daily use, and there's no evidence that daily sessions at consumer output levels cause harm to skin. But there's also little evidence that seven sessions beat five — the response appears to plateau. Doubling sessions to "catch up" after a missed week has no support at all. The honest framing: daily is allowed, 3–5 is sufficient, sporadic is pointless.

How long per session?

Whatever your device's protocol states — typically between 3 and 20 minutes depending on its output. This isn't evasion; it's physics. Session length only makes sense relative to the device's irradiance: a high-output mask delivers in 3 minutes what a weaker one needs 20 for. (It's also why a mask that publishes no output figure can't honestly tell you why its session is the length it is.)

When do you judge results?

Week 8, with photos. Take a front-lit, no-makeup photo in the same spot and light before session one, then every fortnight. Appearance change from light therapy is gradual enough that day-to-day mirror checks will gaslight you in both directions — the photos are the only honest referee.

The routine that actually survives

  • Anchor sessions to an existing habit — the same three or four evenings each week.
  • Do it on clean, dry skin; eye protection on.
  • Set the expectation with whoever you live with that you'll look like a sci-fi extra for ten minutes. It helps.

A note you will find at the end of every Rosalume article: changes in skin appearance from light therapy build over 8–12 weeks of consistent use, 3–5 sessions a week. They are gradual, not dramatic. Any brand — including ours — promising more than that is selling, not informing.
